Workshop Schedule
Data for Justice
Monday, July 27 - 1:00pm to 2:30pm ET
We will introduce students to the controversial role of data in community organizing and social justice: data can help reveal and bring light to inequality, but it can also reinforce systems of power and embed bias. We will explore various data sets, methods, and visualizations to discuss how and where they embed bias. Given that context, we will also consider if and how we can reconcile that and use data for uncovering inequality and the ethical data practices we will need to keep in mind when doing so.
Led by Fatima Koli and Denise Mantey
Zines: An Introduction to Fighting the Power with a Piece of Paper
Tuesday, July 28, 1:00pm to 2:30pm ET
Participants will explore zines about race, ethnicity, and responding to violence from the Barnard Zine Library and other zine collections. After developing a greater understanding of zines and zine culture, we'll jump in and make our own. Students should have paper and a pen or pencil. Additional art supplies--markers, stickers, stencils, clip art, magazines, mail order catalogs, etc. will be helpful, but are not necessary.
Led by Jenna Freedman and Ren Huang
Documenting 2020: Ethics of Protest Photography and Videography
Wednesday, July 29, 1:00pm to 2:30pm ET
We're first going to go over smartphone photography and filmmaking; then we will transition to the ethics of documenting protests for instance and share some resources about how to best do that.
Led by Karl-Mary Akre and Josalynn Smith
Archives and Activism: 1968 and Now
Thursday, July 30, 11:00am to 12:30pm ET
=We will introduce participants to the Barnard Archives through the example of student activism in 1968. We’ll give a brief history, and then guide students through the digital collections to help them find relevant sources. We also want to draw connections between the activism of 1968 and now (BOSS demands to current alumnae demands; protests against Morningside Park gym to protests against Manhattanville/police brutality; etc). At the end of the workshop, we will address the failures of institutional archiving and provide strategies for how participants can create their own personal archives.
Led by Martha Tenney, Tirzah Anderson, Sarah Barlow-Ochshorn and Kaya Alim
Exploring Activist-Driven Public Health: ACT UP, racial justice, and equitable health policy
Friday, July 31, 1:00pm to 2:30pm ET
This workshop will explore the activist-driven public health and policy demands of the organization ACT UP (AIDS COALITION TO UNLEASH POWER). Using data, biomedical research, archival materials, and more, we will consider the different dimensions of the racial and gender inequity of HIV and AIDS policy. This workshop will also discuss the often-forgotten history of HIV-positive Hatians being held at Camp Bulkeley at Guantanamo Bay in the early 90s.
